Media Release – 4 November 2026
The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) urges Muslim Australians, and the mosques, schools and community organisations that serve them, to take part in the national consultation on the Emerging Social Cohesion Roadmap before it closes this Friday, 6 November.
The consultation is convened by SydWest Multicultural Services, Settlement Services International (SSI) and the Settlement Council of Australia, with SBS as media partner. It follows the Think Social Cohesion National Summit held in Parramatta in July, and seeks feedback on five proposed actions: rights and responsibility, reach, participation, accountability and narrative.
“Social cohesion is built with communities, not for them,” NCAM Director Sajida Salman said. “Muslim Australians have lived the consequences of rising hate, and our voices must shape any national plan to address it. We urge everyone to have their say before Friday.”
The survey is available at thinksocialcohesion.com.au in English, 14 other languages and Easy Read. It can be completed as an individual, on behalf of an organisation, or anonymously. Written submissions in any language can be emailed to hello@justgold.net.
NCAM welcomes the Roadmap’s focus on accountability. We encourage participants to ask that the final Roadmap name Islamophobia, alongside antisemitism and other forms of racism, as a threat to cohesion; that it include consistent national data on hate incidents, as the Australian Human Rights Commission recommended last week; and that every commitment carries clear responsibility and public reporting.
“A roadmap is only as good as the voices behind it,” Ms Salman said. “If Muslim Australians are missing from this consultation, our experiences will be missing from the plan. It takes only a few minutes to make sure they are not.”
