NCAM Welcomes Stronger Education Against Antisemitism and Calls for Islamophobia and All Racism to Be Taught Too

The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) welcomes the decision by Australia’s education ministers to endorse new national curriculum resources on antisemitism and the Holocaust. From next year, students will learn about the evils of antisemitism, the horrors of the Holocaust, Jewish history and the contributions of Jewish Australians. The resources were developed by the antisemitism education taskforce led by David Gonski AC, following the Bondi attack.

“We welcome every effort to teach young Australians to reject antisemitism,” NCAM Director Sajida Salman said. “Children of every faith deserve the same protection, and the curriculum should equip students to recognise and reject Islamophobia and all racism too.”

NCAM also welcomes the ministers’ agreement to establish a Social Cohesion Education Advisory Council, chaired by Mr Gonski, to continue work on strengthening social cohesion through education. Education Minister Jason Clare said there is “always more we can do to stamp out racism in all its noxious forms”. NCAM agrees, and stands ready to help.

Schools are where many young Australians first meet prejudice, and where it can best be challenged. Muslim community leaders have raised growing concern about the bullying of Muslim students, and anti-Muslim content online reaches children long before they can recognise it for what it is.

NCAM asks education ministers and the new Advisory Council to develop matching curriculum resources on Islamophobia and on racism in all its forms, so that every student learns to recognise hate whoever it targets; to include Muslim educators and community representatives on the Advisory Council, alongside other faith and multicultural communities; and to consult Islamic schools and Muslim parents as the resources are developed.

“Our children sit side by side in the same classrooms,” Ms Salman said. “They should leave school understanding that hatred of Jews, hatred of Muslims and racism of every kind are wrong, and that every one of them belongs.”
