The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) strongly supports the recent action by the Australian Government in deporting Khizar Hayat, the individual responsible for desecrating a Sikh holy book in a series of videos that sparked widespread outrage both in Australia and abroad. This reckless and provocative behaviour cannot be condoned and stands in direct contrast to the values of respect, tolerance, and understanding that are central to Australian society.
Director of NCAM, Sajida Salman, expressed her solidarity with the Sikh community, condemning the hate-filled acts that fuel division and violence. She said, “The desecration of any sacred text, whether it belongs to the Sikh, Muslim, Christian, or any faith, is an act of hate and should never be tolerated. The Australian community must come together in denouncing such acts and standing with the victims of hate crimes.”
Hayat’s actions, which were widely criticized, were classified as racial vilification, leading to his community service sentence in September. His deportation highlights Australia’s commitment to preventing hate and religious intolerance, as emphasized by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, who stated, “We have zero tolerance for hate crimes or religiously motivated violence.” NCAM commends the Australian Government’s swift and firm response in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that individuals who engage in such hateful behaviour are held accountable. This action aligns with NCAM’s ongoing efforts to promote social harmony, interfaith dialogue, and the protection of all communities from discrimination and harm.
“We stand in solidarity with the Sikh community, and with all communities that face the threat of hate and violence. Australia is a nation that values diversity, and we must continue to reject any attempts to divide us based on race or religion,” said Sajida. NCAM calls on all Australians to unite against hate and to foster an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and compassion. It is only through collective efforts that we can ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our diverse society.
