NCAM Condemns Rising Islamophobic Attacks on Muslims in Australia and Calls for Stronger Government Action
The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) is deeply alarmed by the alarming increase in Islamophobic attacks on Muslims in Australia. Most recently, two Muslim women were violently assaulted at the Epping Plaza in Melbourne, with one of the victims, a pregnant woman, suffering from severe physical and emotional trauma. These attacks are part of a disturbing pattern of hate-driven violence that has been rising in the wake of the Israel-Gaza conflict.

NCAM Director, Sajida Salman, expressed her outrage, saying, “These recent attacks are not isolated incidents, but part of a worrying trend of Islamophobic violence targeting innocent Muslims simply because of their faith. The victims of these heinous assaults have been left traumatized, and the community at large is living in fear. It is imperative that the government and law enforcement agencies take immediate steps to address this escalating wave of violence and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

Islamophobic attacks at Epping Plaza, which involved two Muslim women being assaulted in separate incidents, highlight the growing threat faced by Australian Muslim. Despite the quick response from police and ambulance officers, one of the victims was later subjected to online threats, further exacerbating her trauma. Victoria Police has confirmed the incidents are being treated as prejudice-motivated attacks.

NCAM urges the Australian government to take proactive steps in combatting Islamophobia, including implementing better protections for vulnerable communities, prioritizing anti-hate crime legislation, and ensuring that law enforcement agencies are equipped to respond appropriately to Islamophobic violence. As Sajida stated, “We cannot afford to ignore these escalating attacks. The safety of all Australians, regardless of their faith, must be a priority. It is time for the government to take meaningful action to ensure that Muslims across Australia can live free from fear and discrimination.”
