The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) has condemned the clear double standards in Australia’s foreign policy, which have been further highlighted by recent events in Ukraine. While Foreign Minister Penny Wong has stated that all diplomatic options, including expelling the Russian ambassador over the killing of an Australian in Ukraine, are on the table, she has rejected similar measures for Israel. This inconsistency in handling international issues has drawn criticism, especially considering Israel’s ongoing violations of international law.
NCAM points out that while opposition foreign affairs spokesperson Simon Birmingham has called for the expulsion of Russia’s diplomat in response to the Ukrainian incident, he has remained silent on Israel’s violations. These include the killing of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom by Israeli forces during their military operations in Gaza. Despite Israel’s continued actions, such as apartheid, genocide, and illegal occupation, the Australian government has consistently shielded Israel from accountability.
This hypocrisy is further highlighted by Attorney General Mark Dreyfus’ upcoming visit to Israel, which is being presented as a reaffirmation of Australia’s “enduring friendship” with the country, while ignoring Israel’s oppressive policies, war crimes, and existing arrest warrants for its leaders. NCAM insists that if Australia is truly committed to justice and peace, it must hold Israel to the same level of scrutiny applied to other nations.
NCAM demand the Australian government to expel the Israeli ambassador, impose sanctions, implement a two-way arms embargo, and pursue international legal actions against Israeli officials for their crimes. NCAM also call for support for Palestine’s liberation and self-determination and the dismantling of Israel’s apartheid regime. Sajida Salman NCAM Director, argued that the government’s refusal to act on Israel’s violations sends a clear message that it prioritizes its relationship with a genocidal state over justice and accountability.
