NCAM Condemns Proposed Annexation of Gaza and Calls for International Action against Ethnic Cleansing
The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) strongly condemns the recent discussions regarding the potential annexation of parts of the Gaza Strip by Israel. These proposals, as discussed between US and Israeli leaders, represent a grave threat to international law, Palestinian self-determination, and the prospects for a just and lasting peace in the region. NCAM joins other organizations in expressing its deep concern and calls upon the Australian government and the international community to take immediate and decisive action to prevent this illegal act.

NCAM Director, Sajida Salman, expressed her profound concern over the proposed annexation, stating, “The annexation of Palestinian territory is a clear violation of international law and a further erosion of the rights of the Palestinian people. Such actions undermine any hope for a two-state solution and exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The international community must send a clear and unequivocal message that such actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The proposed annexation follows a long history of conflict and displacement in the region. The ongoing blockade of Gaza has created a humanitarian crisis, with limited access to essential goods and services. The potential annexation would further restrict the movement of Palestinians, further fragment Palestinian territory, and severely compromise the possibility of a viable Palestinian state. NCAM advocates for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that respect both sides’ rights.

NCAM urges the Australian government to take a leadership role in condemning the proposed annexation and advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people. This includes formally recognizing the State of Palestine, imposing sanctions on Israeli officials responsible for war crimes, demanding an end to the Israeli occupation, and supporting international efforts to hold Israel accountable for violations of international law. “Australia must demonstrate its commitment to justice and human rights by taking concrete action,” said Sajida Salman. “We cannot stand idly by while international law is disregarded and the Palestinian people are denied their fundamental rights.”
