In Sefton, NSW, offensive graffiti referencing the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was found sprayed on a popular footpath, a location frequented by members of the local Muslim community. NCAM condemn this incident, emphasizing that Islamophobic graffiti is not only an affront to individuals but a reflection of the growing hatred and division in Australian neighborhoods. “This disturbing act is a stark symbol of the ongoing rise of Islamophobia that is increasingly targeting Muslim communities,” said NCAM Director Sajida Salman
Furthermore, two Muslim women in hijabs were reportedly assaulted at a shopping center in Melbourne’s Epping, an incident that police are investigating as potentially motivated by religious prejudice. The victims, one of whom is pregnant, have been left traumatized by the random and unprovoked attack. NCAM calls for a swift investigation into these assaults and urges authorities to treat such incidents with the utmost seriousness. “There is absolutely no place for Islamophobia or any form of hate-based violence in Australia,” said Sajida. “We cannot allow these acts to become normalized or go unpunished.”
NCAM stresses the urgent need for stronger laws and proactive measures to tackle Islamophobia. Despite efforts to introduce tougher hate laws, there is a concerning lack of response from political leaders and law enforcement. NCAM urges the Australian government to prioritize the safety of all citizens and hold perpetrators accountable. “It’s time for Australia to take a stand against hate and ensure Muslim communities can live free from fear,” said Sajida.
