NCAM Urges Swift Action Against Rising Antisemitism Amid Terror Plot Threat
The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) expresses deep concern over the increasing Islamophobic Incidents across Australia and the disproportionate response these attacks are receiving from both government and law enforcement. While NCAM strongly condemns any act of violence or vandalism directed at places of worship, schools, businesses, or homes, there is a troubling pattern of inconsistent responses when these attacks target Muslim communities. This disparity undermines the safety and well-being of Muslim Australians and calls into question the commitment to ensuring equal protection for all citizens.

Recent anti-Semitic attacks have prompted strong government responses, which NCAM applauds. However, it is concerning that similar clarity has not been provided regarding Islamophobic incidents. This failure to distinguish that Muslims are not responsible for such attacks only fuels harmful stereotypes and isolates the Muslim community further.

The rise in Islamophobic incidents in Australia is alarming. According to the Islamophobia Register Australia, incidents of Islamophobic abuse have surged by 530 percent in the 16 months since October 2023. These include physical assaults, online hate speech, threats against mosques and schools, and property damage. Despite the scale of these attacks, there has been little coverage in the media or swift action from authorities. NCAM calls for the same level of urgency in addressing Islamophobia as has been shown in response to other forms of hate, ensuring that no community feels marginalized or unprotected.

Sajida Salman, NCAM Director, stressed the need for immediate action from the government and media. “Islamophobia must be treated with the same seriousness as other hate,” Sajida said. “We call for fair media coverage and increased resources to combat Islamophobia, including education and community safety initiatives. Leaders must denounce hate and ensure no community is left vulnerable.”
