he National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) strongly condemns the recent discovery of a caravan filled with explosives, potentially aimed at targeting the Jewish community in Sydney. This discovery, made last week in Dural, highlights a disturbing escalation of antisemitic violence that has been threatening the peace and safety of Australia’s diverse communities. Police have confirmed the explosive materials, which had the potential for a mass casualty event, were discovered alongside antisemitic material. NCAM stands in solidarity with the Jewish community and supports efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
NCAM acknowledges the significant work being done by Australian law enforcement agencies to address this growing threat and protect vulnerable communities. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s firm stance in declaring zero tolerance for antisemitism is a step in the right direction, and the NCAM urges continued vigilance and action against extremist threats of all kinds. The recent incident is a chilling reminder of how deeply ingrained hatred can manifest in dangerous ways, targeting specific religious and ethnic groups with the intent to incite fear and division.
Australia’s commitment to multiculturalism must remain a cornerstone of its national identity. In the face of rising extremism, it is crucial that all religious and cultural communities, come together to reject hatred and foster unity. Islam, Judaism, and Christianity share a profound spiritual and ethical foundation rooted in values of peace, compassion, and respect for one another. NCAM believes that strengthening dialogue and mutual understanding between these faith communities is essential to overcoming division and promoting social harmony.
The tragic rise in targeted violence against Jewish Australians should prompt reflection on the broader need for inclusive, respectful engagement across all sectors of society. Sajida Salman, NCAM Director calls on all Australians to join in efforts to foster a spirit of brotherhood and cooperation between diverse religious communities.
