For over a decade, Syria has been ravaged by a devastating civil war that began in 2011. The ongoing conflict has led to the loss of more than 306,000 civilian lives and displaced over half of Syria’s pre-war population of 23 million people. In addition to the staggering human toll, approximately 7 million Syrians remain internally displaced, with millions more seeking refuge in countries around the world. As of today, more than 70% of the population requires urgent humanitarian aid to survive.
The NCAM stands in unwavering solidarity with Australian Syrians and their families, who have endured unimaginable pain, loss, and displacement. Many have watched loved ones suffer and have spent years in foreign lands, unable to return to their homes. The long-standing trauma inflicted on the Syrian people cannot be overstated, but as the Assad regime finally collapses, a new chapter of hope begins to emerge.
“Today, we stand with the Syrian people in their journey toward peace and rebuilding,” said Sajida Salman, NCAM Director. “We pray that Syrians of all faiths, traditions, and backgrounds can finally live in freedom, harmony, and dignity. It is time for them to heal, rebuild their communities, and chart a course toward a brighter future.”
The NCAM will continue to advocate for the rights of Syrian refugees and displaced persons and will stand alongside them in their efforts to rebuild their lives, offering hope for a brighter future for Syria and its people.
