The National Council of Australian Muslims (NCAM) welcomes Australia’s recent support for two crucial UN resolutions. These resolutions demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and urge Israel to lift its ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). This vote aligns Australia with the global consensus on these critical issues.

While NCAM appreciates this vote, it emphasizes that concrete actions are crucial. Simply voting in favor of resolutions without tangible consequences for Israel’s actions is insufficient. True commitment will be demonstrated by concrete steps to hold Israel accountable for its ongoing violations of international law and human rights.

These resolutions, though non-binding, highlight the growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the obstacles Israel places in the path of UNRWA’s vital work. NCAM stresses that voting in favor of these resolutions must be the first step, not the final one. Decisive actions, such as imposing targeted sanctions and applying consistent diplomatic pressure on Israel, are essential to translate these resolutions into meaningful change on the ground.

NCAM urges the Australian government to move beyond symbolic gestures. Australia’s voice at the UN carries weight. It must leverage this influence to advocate for peace and justice in the Middle East. This includes actively supporting international efforts to enforce these resolutions and consistently opposing any actions that undermine the peace process & prolong the suffering of innocent civilians.

“As Australians, we have a moral obligation to ensure our international actions reflect our commitment to human rights and justice,” stated Sajida Salman, NCAM Director. “It’s time for our actions to align with our votes at the United Nations.”
